Hi Debbie

The school sound as if they are doing the right thing by giving her an IEP. This should set achievable targets for her reading improvement with the help of the reading support they are providing. However, if she struggles with reading then her work will always take longer than that of her classmates - and this should be taken into consideration when work is set for her, or teacher expectations of what she should achieve should be less.

Poor behaviour - disrupting the class and not listening - is often connected with dyslexia because a struggling child will find it difficult to focus or will use work avoidance tactics as a way of 'coping'. Poor readers find it difficult to understand what they are reading and will have to re-read material to try to get to grips with the content. This is a tiring and trying experience!

If your daughter was only just below the national average for reading writing and maths earlier this year then I don't think there is any chance of her being considered for a Statement. However, if there is dyslexia in the family then there is every reason to get an assessment for your daughter so that you and the school can understand her strengths as well as her weaker areas. Sadly the school are unlikely to fund this for you, so you will need to contact your local dyslexia association to find a list of assessors. The BDA has a list of local associations, or if you live in Hampshire email or phone our helpline. Hope this helps! Barbara

i was wondering how long you waited before you decided to go through this process. My daughter is 7 and has always struggled. we had a fantastic infants school, and had los of support and help. by the time she left she was just below national average for reading writing and maths. she has been at jrn for one term now and she has dropped dramatically in reading and is struggling in all other areas. we have an EAP and she is getting extra support with reading but it seems to be the main class work she struggles the most with. she tells me she dose not understand the work or she has to stay in at breaktimes because she has not finished the work. her class teacher has said she disruptes the class and dose not listen. in one meeting he actually said if she did not change she could be a bully. i was devastaed.
i feel like no one is listening to me. the senco has said she is behaind but most chidren struggle and fall behind in first term and by easter we should see an increase in understanding and knowlage. i am unsure. she shows alot of signs and behaviaral tratres of dyslexia and her dad has dyslexia too.
i am so worried for her and her future, but i dont know what to do. i have voiced my concerns several times since she strated jrn school.
any advice would be greatfully recieved

I'm really impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Anyway keep up the excellent quality writing, it’s rare to see a great blog like this one today..
