Sue McKenna – Chairman

“Hello, My name is Sue McKenna and I am the Chairman of the Hampshire Dyslexia Association…..”I joined Hampshire Dyslexia Association as a member in 1992 shortly after our 8 year old daughter was identified as dyslexic. In order to support her, and the family, I began a long and interesting journey as a special needs tutor. Currently I work at the University of Southampton as a Consultant Tutor as well as with individuals in the workplace who are funded by Access to Work. As chair of the Association I co ordinate the administration and deliver training at open meetings and Bespoke training for employers or schools. I look forward to hearing from you. “

“I enjoyed a long career as a banker in a large multinational bank but now enjoy working for a university in London as the Business Developments Manager. I have been the treasurer of the Association since 2005 and am very impressed with how the members of the committee dedicate hours of their time on the helpline, projects, training and at meetings and events.”

“I qualified as a PE teacher many years ago, but re-trained as a Dyslexia Specialist Teacher and Assessor when our school, Crestwood, was asked to host one of Hampshire’s specialist resource bases for dyslexia. I joined the HDA about 5 years ago and, with the expert help of Sue Kerrigan, set about building and maintaining a website for the charity. The aim was to make information about dyslexia as accessible as possible to all those with an interest in it. Now we are about to launch ‘Model 2′ which will be much more interactive and I know I have a lot to learn about keeping it up to date. Be patient with me please!”

“My name is Gill and I have recently joined the committee of the HDA after being a member for several years.  I undertook my dyslexia training about 10 years ago.  Since that time I have worked as a specific learning difficulties teacher in primary, secondary, FE and HE.  I have developed an interest in Dyscalculia and maths difficulties, undertaking an MA(Ed) at Southampton University researching the subject and designing an intervention programme.  I have published some articles and spoken at conferences on dyscalclulia and maths difficulties.  At present I have a private practice tutoring children with maths difficulties as well as working as a Learning Support Teacher at Winchester College.  I have three children of my own with dyslexia and would like to feel that this has given me an insight into the types of problems dyslexics and their families encounter.”

“I have been a committee member for Hampshire Dyslexia Association for a number of years now, and take my turn on running the Helpline. I studied for my SpLD diploma in the late 80s and became a SenCo in a mainstream Hampshire Secondary school in 1991. In 1997 I became Head of the ALC and SenCo at Stanbridge Earls School, a specialist independent school which caters for those with SpLD. It was during this time that I attained Specialist Teacher status. I retired after 12 very happy years there, and have since become involved with the Wessex Youth Offending Team. I am currently a panel member and about to embark on planning a life skills programme. In addition, HDA has become involved with the Hampshire Probation Service, and together with Sue McKenna, I am taking part in planning and delivering a pilot scheme aimed at supporting those on probation with SpLD. My ties with school life have not been cut completely. In the exams season I support students as a reader/writer and have just been appointed as the ‘listening ear’ for students at the school who may have problems that they cannot discuss with serving school staff.”

I have been a member of the HDA committee since 2005 following the completion of a course entitled ‘Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia).’ My main role on the committee is that of the newsletter editor which has led me to learn many new I.T. skills. I welcome suggestions for future articles, so please let me know your ideas.
Many years ago, I qualified as an Early Years Teacher. In 1990, when my children were small, I established my own business called the Pre school Skills Club. I offer enjoyable, structured, educational activities for young children to prepare them for school. In 1999 I added the School Skills Club and now the majority of my time is spent as a private tutor, helping primary school children to improve their reading and writing.
