The MOVING ON Project

Hampshire Dyslexia Association has begun work on a pilot programme in conjunction with Hampshire Probation.

Based at the Havant office, 2 of our committee members meet regularly with clients who have been screened as being dyslexic and who are on probation.

It is designed to be a short intervention for offenders to prevent re-offending and to support the work carried out by Offender Managers.

The programme is delivered in 6 one-hour sessions. The first 5 of these are delivered one-to-one with the offender by the committee member, who is a dyslexia specialist. The final session is a 3-way meeting with the Offender Manager joining the discussion in order to plan future support.

In order to access the programme, clients must complete the BDA Screening checklist and score 12 or more. Alternatively, offenders who already have a diagnosis of dyslexia may use the programme if they have not previously accessed support.

Still in its early stages, the programme seeks to inform offenders and give them the opportunity to discuss their individual needs. Areas such as communication skills, time-management and self-esteem are already emerging as key issues alongside a need to access basic literacy skills.

As this is a pilot scheme, we continue to work closely with Hampshire Probation to develop it along relevant and workable lines.
