Opportunities for those wishing to support dyslexic students.

TDA Scholarship Programme for Professional Development
On 27th June the Department for Education (DfE) launched the national scholarshiip scheme to support professional development in 4 areas – Maths, English, Science and Special Educational Needs (SEN) including specific impairments & disabilities. Qualified teachers working in Government funded schools can apply.

The aim is to support Masters level CPD by providing teachers with the freedom to choose programmes or activities which will support & strengthen their knowledge in their subject area or about SEN.

Applications opened in June this year and the final date for submission is 5pm on 30th September 2011. A panel of experts will meet to decide who will receive a scholarship of up to £3,500 and applicants will be notified of their success – or failure – by December 2011.

Courses run by Hampshire County Council for school staff are available through the Hampshire Teaching and Leadership College (HTLC). This can be accessed at http://www3.hants.gov.uk/education/htlc.htm .

Courses on offer include SIDNEY, After SIDNEY, ALSA for Teaching Assistants (accredited by the BDA) and the Hampshire Certificate in Dyslexia (accredited by the University of Winchester.)

The Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre offers OCR courses at levels 5 and 7. Courses last for one year each. They also run the TA Level 3 certificate (NOCN) over 16 weeks. For more details go to www.arkellcentre.org

The Open University:

Difficulties in literacy development Code: E801

The OU says “The course can be taken as part of our masters programme in education or on its own for a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies in Education (Difficulties in Literacy Development). It can also lead to accreditation by the British Dyslexia Association.

The Joint Council for General Qualifications has now formally accepted successful completion of E801 and the accompanying certificate conforms to their criteria for approval of qualification for teachers preparing reports in support of examination candidates (GCSE and A-level) with special requirements.“

Southampton University School of Education Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia) Assessment & Identification (PCES). The professional training programme for Specialist Teacher Assessors at the University of Southampton has been in existence since 1994. The programme conforms to the national pattern of a Postgraduate Course of Educational Studies (PCES) over one academic year, together with supervised, fieldwork experience to meet the regulations set down by the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) to enable suitably qualified teachers and speech and language therapist professionals to gain the Associate Membership of the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA).
